Adam FlandersIwas brought up in Belfast, Maine by my parents Vicki and Ed. I've always had a very supportive and unconditionally loving family. My mom, a teacher and child development sociologist, brought me up encouraging me to think for myself and stand up for my beliefs. My dad, a former science teacher and business owner, inspired in me a strong interest in science and a value for the "self-made man."

I really like the motto of Kansas: "Ad astra per aspera" ("To the stars through difficulties"). I've had plenty of hardships in life, but I've always conquered the obstacles in my path. In doing so, I've gained a great deal of wisdom, emotional maturity, and hopefully helped others as well. I believe we create our own destinies.

Adam FlandersMy dreams for the future are pretty simple. I'd like to live near the ocean in a warm climate where I can have a year-round garden and enjoy nature in shorts and a t-shirt every day. I don't care how big my house is or what kind of car I drive. I'm anxious to get in a lab setting to pursue a career in plant genetics. I hope to involve myself in conservation efforts as well, possibly field work. I see myself traveling a great deal and being a "lifetime learner." I want my work to benefit science and less fortunate people suffering around the world.

I've always had just about every pet you can think of growing up. I think animals can teach people a lot about respect and compassion. I have strong principles, especially for human rights and equality, the environment, and ethical democracy. My spirituality is very deep and it's extremely important for me to find meaning in everything I do. Honesty, loyalty, and kindness are my most important values.
